OpenAI's ChatGPT Rolls Out New "Tasks" Feature for Scheduling and Recurring Reminders
OpenAI has unveiled a new beta feature called “Tasks”, designed to enhance ChatGPT’s functionality by allowing paying users to schedule reminders and set recurring requests. This feature will be available to ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Pro users globally starting this week.
With the Tasks feature, users can create simple reminders such as, “Remind me when my passport expires in six months,” and receive follow-up push notifications on their enabled platforms. Additionally, users can set recurring requests like, “Every Friday, give me a weekend plan based on my location and the weather forecast,” or “Provide me with a daily news briefing at 7 a.m.”
How Tasks Works
The Tasks Manager is accessible via the ChatGPT web app. Users can activate it by selecting the “Go with scheduled tasks” option from a dropdown menu. From there, they can send instructions to ChatGPT to create reminders or recurring actions. OpenAI also notes that ChatGPT might suggest tasks based on prior conversations.
Tasks can be managed through conversations with ChatGPT on any platform or via a dedicated “Tasks Manager” tab on the web app. However, this feature currently does not support Advanced Voice Mode.
Key Features and Limitations
While Tasks adds an agent-like capability to ChatGPT, it remains limited compared to a fully autonomous AI agent. For instance, ChatGPT can now browse the web on a set schedule but does not perform continuous searches or transactions. Users can request ChatGPT to check monthly for concert tickets, but it cannot provide real-time alerts or make purchases.
This controlled implementation is part of OpenAI’s strategy to gradually explore how users interact with agentic systems. For now, the feature is only available in beta, with plans to expand its availability to the mobile app and free ChatGPT tier in the future.
A Preview of the Future of AI Agents
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has stated that 2025 will be a landmark year for AI agents, predicting that these systems will begin to “join the workforce.” Tasks serves as a stepping stone towards more advanced agentic systems, such as OpenAI’s rumored project, Operator, which is expected to include capabilities like writing code and booking travel.
Although Tasks represents a limited form of agentic AI, OpenAI aims to develop more complex systems that handle intricate tasks. However, with these advancements come new challenges, particularly regarding safety and ethical considerations.
What’s Next for OpenAI?
During this beta period, OpenAI plans to gather feedback on how users interact with Tasks to refine the feature. The company is also working on introducing additional agentic systems in the near future, further pushing the boundaries of what AI assistants can achieve.
As AI assistants evolve, features like Tasks highlight the potential for these tools to integrate seamlessly into daily life, offering users practical, proactive support.
